About
The Great Barrier Reef, one of Australia’s most amazing natural gifts stretching 2300 kilometres across the sea on the coast of Queensland. The Great Barrier Reef, a home too many is now critically under threat risking lives for thousands of underwater creatures and their homes. It's time we took action to save this wonderful environment! The study from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), published in the US journal the ‘Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences’, provides a dim view of the reef’s future. Based on the world’s most extensive time series data on reef condition, over a time period of 27 years (1985 – 2012) there has been a major decrease in coral cover from 28.0% to 13.8% (0.53% loss per year), a loss of 50.7% of initial coral cover. ‘Coral cover on the GBR is consistently declining, and without intervention, it will likely fall to 5 – 10 percent within the next 10 years,’ says the authors of the report. ‘Without intervention, the GBR may lose the biodiversity and ecological integrity for which it was listed as a World Heritage Area'. Many social networking sites quote 'You never know what you have until you lose it, and when you lose it you can't get it back'. Will you miss the Great Barrier Reef?
Statement of Intention
I chose to raise awareness of the Dangers to the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef is under threat mainly because of us and our production of waste, pollution, over-fishing and shipping accidents leading to massive oil spills. These actions not only affects the marine life of the Great Barrier Reef but also it affects the sustainability of the health of this Earth and by saving the Great Barrier it takes that one step to becoming more sustainable by cutting down our waste, pollution and demand for imports and exports. Also the Great Barrier Reef is truly one of nature’s gifts and losing it would be a huge devastation to Australia. I hope when people read this website they not only realize that the Great Barrier is in danger but how much it will affect us and how a simple thing like turning off a light can save a fish or a dolphin’s life.
